Getting Around Auckland

Auckland can be explored in a myriad of ways, from tours and coaches, to sail boats and scooters. Across the region there are a variety of operators able to provide transportation options for your needs.

Renting a vehicle enables flexible travel and there are a range of different types of vehicles to suit including motorhomes, convertibles and motorcycles.

Half and full day tours travelling by coach, van and even limousine are available showing the highlights of Auckland, or try the hop-on, hop-off bus which travels around the top sightseeing destinations in the city.

There is a selection of convenient and easy ways to get around the central city by public transport. The Link bus links the city fringe suburbs with the central city and is a great way to orientate visitors to the area. There is also the free City Circuit, environmentally friendly red hybrid-electric buses that follow a circuit of the inner city. Buses and trains also run to all parts of the Auckland region. As a city surrounded by water there are a number of regular ferries travelling from the central city to various locations on the North Shore, and to Pine Harbour in Manukau. Passenger and vehicle ferries travel to many of the islands including the populated Waiheke Island and Great Barrier Island in the Hauraki Gulf.

The following is some useful information about Getting Around in Auckland:

Shuttles and taxis - various operators are licensed by the airport and meet all flights. Shuttle and Airbus tickets are available from all airport or city i-SITE visitor information centres.

Rental cars - various companies offer rentals from airport and city depots.

Driving Directions From airport to Auckland CBD: Take George Bolt Memorial Drive (the main exit road), to the intersection with SH20. Follow the signs for Auckland City. This will take you onto the motorway. Leave the motorway at the Queenstown Road exit, turn right into Queenstown Road and continue straight ahead into Pah Road, which becomes Manukau Road. After approximately five kilometres, turn left at the traffic lights into Alpers Ave. At the end of Alpers Ave, turn right into Gillies Ave, then left onto the motorway to Auckland City.

From Auckland CBD to airport: Take the Gillies Ave exit from the southern motorway, turning right into Gilles Ave and them left into Owens Road. At the end of Owens Road turn right into Manukau Road and follow the airport route, signposted with a white aeroplane on a blue square.
