Suggested Itinerary
Day One
Head north on State Highway One and make a small detour to discover the historic bohemian village of Puhoi. There are a number of original buildings here, including the iconic Puhoi Pub - a local institution and a museum in its own right. Puhoi is also home to a popular cheese factory and cafe, and it is the start point for canoe trips down the Puhoi River. Further north is the riverside township of Warkworth, home to Parry Kauri Park and a great selection of riverside cafes. From here it is only a few minutes to Sandspit, where ferries depart for Kawau Island. The Matakana area is just a short drive away. It will tempt you with a range of boutique wineries and a thriving local art scene.
Day Two
The landscape from Puhoi to Pakiri is dotted with deserted bays, small islands and recreational reserves. Follow the winding gravel road to beautiful Tawharanui Regional Park or stop at Omaha to enjoy the white sand beaches and waves. Take a drive to Goat Island Marine Reserve near Leigh, where you can join a dive charter or hire snorkelling gear to explore the amazing underwater environment. If you want to stay dry, take a tour of the reserve in a glass bottom boat. Continue north to Pakiri Beach to discover a breathtaking surf beach that stretches as far as the eye can see. Guided horse treks can take you along the beach or through the nearby forest. Depart Pakiri and journey back to Auckland via Wellsford, or take the linking West of Auckland route.
