Getting to Auckland by road
Travelling to Auckland by road is both easy and scenic. Along the way, enjoy the freedom of being able to stop at any place that catches your eye.
Travelling to Auckland from the north, you'll pass through native forests and past splendid beaches. From the south, you'll be surrounded by lush green farmland before passing over the Bombay Hills to the vibrant and diverse landscape of Auckland. Motorways and expressways connect Auckland to both Northland and Waikato and a motorway network runs throughout the Auckland region.

Hiring a vehicle

Buying a vehicle
Purchasing a vehicle in Auckland is a good idea if you plan to do a lot of road travel. Auckland offers a number of markets where you can both sell and buy cars, vans and in some cases campervans. Visit the Backpackers Car Market, Auckland Car Fair, Ellerslie Racecourse Car Fair or the Manukau City Park and Sell. Car auctions are another option, or try searching in newspapers or online at trademe.co.nz. Before purchasing a car, be aware that the car must have a formal change of ownership (this can be done at any New Zealand Post Shop), a current registration (3 months, 6 months or 1 year) and a current warrant of fitness. If you are concerned about the quality of your vehicle, various companies offer comprehensive pre-purchase checks which can save you money in the long run. Insurance is not compulsory but is highly recommended. There is a range of options from third party to full insurance.
