South Auckland
There’s plenty for the family to do in Auckland’s south. Visit New Zealand’s premier theme park, Rainbow’s End, for some adventure and excitement for the whole family. Or meet the huge saltwater crocodiles and the delicate butterflies at Butterfly Creek.
Adjacent to Butterfly Creek you’ll find Rocket Ropes, offering a unique mix of adrenaline-pumping aerial challenges. Conveniently located next door is Treasure Island Adventure Golf with cascading waterfalls, haunted treasure caves and pirate ships providing a backdrop to the ultimate golfing adventure.
Fancy a round of golf? Tree-lined fairways, ponds and a river combine to make a top quality golfing experience at Pukekohe Golf Course, while the Aviation Country Club setting provides extensive views of the Manukau Harbour. Alternatively, sharpen your game at JK’s Driving Range, New Zealand’s only 24-hour driving range.
Afterwards, relax in the afternoon sunshine with a platter of food and a glass of award-winning Pinot Noir or Gewurztraminer at Villa Maria Estate.
Explore one of Auckland’s most beautiful corners: Glenbrook, Waiuku and the Awhitu Peninsula. You’ll reach Glenbrook first where a magical vintage steam railway runs - open Sundays and some holidays from late October to early June. While you're in the area check out the dramatic waterfall at Wrights Watergardens.
On to Kariotahi for lunch at Castaways on the cliff top overlooking the black-sand beach where the surf pounds in from the Tasman Sea. Drive up the Awhitu Peninsula where roads to the beach branch off everywhere. At small townships along the way you’ll find artists’ studios, bird parks and Awhitu Wines - a boutique vineyard.
Finally, climb-up inside the restored 19th century lighthouse and take in the panoramic views of the wild harbour, the Auckland city skyline in the distance and dramatic coastline. On your return, visit Spookers at the old Kingseat hospital for the fright of your life.
