Mount Eden is a residential and retail suburb southwest of downtown Auckland. It’s also the name of the area’s extinct volcano, a large and prominent scoria cone which is the highest natural point in Auckland.

It’s a must to take in the panoramic 360-degree views from the top of Mount Eden, which is also known in Māori as Maungawhau. The impressive bowl-like crater is 50-metres deep and has cattle that graze on its pastures. The slopes of Maungawhau were once densely populated by Māori and the crater is known as the food bowl of Matāoho. The summit is accessible by both foot and vehicle. It’s a popular place to get some great photos of Auckland and offers an impressive sight of Auckland.
