The Auckland Diwali Festival was first held in 2002, initiated by the Asia New Zealand Foundation and delivered in partnership with the then-Auckland City Council (now Auckland Council).
More than 35,000 people attend the festival every year, which showcases not only traditional Indian culture, but contemporary New Zealand Indian culture as well.
The festival features local and international dance, music and theatre performers, food and c raft stalls, a wedding expo, seminars and workshops.
The Asia New Zealand Foundation also initiated the Wellington Diwali Festival, which takes place on Labour Weekend each year. The Auckland Diwali Festival usually takes place either side of Labour Weekend, to allow performers travelling from Indian to take part in both festivals.
