Glenfern Sanctuary

At Glenfern Sanctuary visitors can experience the natural beauty of native New Zealand forests and wildlife on Great Barrier Island.

Restored from farmland to native forest over the last century, Glenfern Sanctuary is now home to several rare and endangered native species of New Zealand.

Visitors can take a guided tour through a botanical walkway illustrating many of the 9000 native trees planted in the sanctuary and then cross a suspension bridge into the crown of a 600 year old kauri tree.

Ongoing pest eradication provides a safe haven for many native species, allowing visitors to spot the likes of black petrel, brown teal, kaka, chevron skink and North Island robin.

Glenfern Sanctuary aims to continue to re-forest the valley with more native plants, control pests, extend the existing walkway for visitors, provide education about New Zealand ecology and breed and raise endangered native species.
