Culture and Heritage
Auckland’s lure to travellers is reflected in the names it was given by early Maori: it is known in Maori as Tamaki Makau Rau, which can be translated as the maiden sought by one hundred lovers. The Ngati Whatua iwi or tribe, widely recognised as the dominant tribe of Auckland, made it its home sometime in the mid 17th century and also referred to it as Te Herenga Waka, the place where many canoes are tethered.
The listings in this section will give you some ways to experience Auckland’s Maori culture, as well as Auckland's British colonial heritage and the influences of the later waves of Pacific Island and Asian immigrants.
