Where is Auckland? Auckland is located in the northern central region of the North Island of New Zealand. The city lies cross an 11km (8 mile) wide volcanic isthmus separating two harbours. The Waitemata Harbour to the east opens to the Hauraki Gulf, and to the Pacific Ocean. The Manukau Harbour to the west opens to the Tasman Sea and its entrance is flanked by black sand surf beaches. The nearest city to the south of Auckland is Hamilton, and to the north, Whangarei.
