Auckland Convention Bureau’s increased focus on international business events is paying dividends, with more bids and more wins bringing over $10 million to the region.
Auckland Convention Bureau (ACB) bid for 36 international conventions in the last 11 months compared to 29 in the last financial year.
Twelve have already been won, with a potential economic value to Auckland of $10.1 million. The results of the remaining 13 bids, which have a combined potential value of $17.2 million to Auckland, are still pending.
In the last financial year (July 2013 to May 2014), Auckland has hosted 13 international scientific conventions, including the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, the 12th International Conference on Frontiers of Polymers and Advanced Materials, and the Royal Australasian College of Physicians.
ACB Manager Anna Hayward says these meetings of minds have far reaching benefits.
“Not only do they bring economic benefits to local tourism and hospitality businesses, there are also long-term gains for these specialist industry sectors, including infrastructure investments and collaborative projects, not to mention knowledge exchange,” says Mrs Hayward.
Site visits and famils from the Australian market are also seeing a marked increase and Auckland is now front of mind for more and more Australian business event organisers.
“Now more than ever, we are really getting a sense that Auckland is the cool kid on the block when it comes to hot conference and events destinations in Australasia,” says Mrs. Hayward.
“Precincts like Queens Wharf, Wynyard Quarter and Britomart are emerging as destinations in their own right and really add to the whole business event experience. Delegates from Australia can hop on a plane as if they were travelling to the next state, but with the added bonus of duty free and the excitement of getting out their passport.”
Auckland Convention Bureau markets Auckland as a destination for meetings, incentives, conventions and events.
