An ultimate weekend in Auckland

An ultimate weekend in Auckland

In January 2014, we asked Aucklanders what they would do if they had 48 hours and $5000 to show their friends and family the ultimate weekend in Auckland. One lucky winner got to make their dream weekend a reality.

We received some fantastic entries that covered everything from heli-fishing to walks in the Waitakere Ranges rainforest, but it was Janine’s entry ‘In a city where we’re spoilt for choice’ that won over our judge, passionate Aucklander Sir John Kirwan.

In her entry, Janine included a scenic seaplane flight to Waiheke Island, a picnic lunch at Lake Wainamu, an evening kayak to Rangitoto Island, dinner at Josh Emett’s restaurant Ostro and much more.

Watch the video to follow Janine’s ultimate weekend in the city where the show never stops.

Janine's winning entry - In a city where we’re spoilt for choice

Waking early we’ll walk to breakfast and coffee at Best Ugly Bagels before heading to our Auckland Seaplane.

Taking off from the water and landing on Oneroa Beach will be simply unforgettable as we head to Waiheke for the thrill of the Ecozip. We’ll also take time to appreciate island life from the balcony of the Oyster Inn with a plate of NZ cheese and a local wine before returning to the CBD.

High Tea up the Sky Tower will offer both panoramic views and a chance to relax as our day will end in kayak. Paddling to Rangitoto, we’ll walk to the summit and enjoy an evening BBQ while gazing back at the evening cityscape.

Up before sunrise we’ll drive west to see in daybreak from within a hot air balloon. We’ll admire the outer city from the tranquillity of the balloon and complete the experience with complimentary breakfast accompanied by local sparkling wine.

Behind Bethalls Beach, obscured by sand dunes is Lake Wainamu, a hidden Auckland gem and the perfect destination for a morning of relaxation, swimming and picnic lunch.

Feeling revived we’re guaranteed fun clay pigeon shooting at the Waitemata Clay Target Club.

Our afternoon is coming to an end however there’s still time to stop by Hallertau for a sample and live local music at the craft brewery.

Leaving our car, Auckland Sea Shuttles will pick us up from the jetty outside the iconic Riverhead pub. We’re city bound, cruising down the Rangiopuni Creek and under the Harbour Bridge.

I love the idea of sand in the central city so on our return we’ll take up some lounger space and enjoy ice-cream on Waitemata Plaza’s temporary urban beach.

Dinner on the balcony of Ostro will be our final treat, celebrating and embracing Auckland -home, sweet, home!
