Village Coordinator - Maere Baiteke-Takanene
What are your village’s music highlights?
Visitors to our village will be embraced by our stage programme that will mainly showcase the traditional singing and performances. Leading these performances will be the Kirikiriroa Cultural Group, which is a blend of children, youth and elders.
What are some must see activities?
We invite you to view and experience traditional weaving in our ‘te auti’ or kitset ‘fale’. In the activity tent will be activities for children and youth such as traditional weaving and learning about how these relate to our legends.
What’s a ‘must-try’ dish?
Come in and enjoy our culinary delights, fish like you’ve never tasted before and other various dishes cooked to perfection by our skillful chefs. Enjoy main dishes like sundried fish with taro and rice, boiled fish in coconut cream, and curry with rice and vegetables. Plus try tuae made out of preserved pandanus fruit with coconut cream.
What’s a little-known fact about your country or Pasifika village?
Because of the nature and condition of our land and the impacts of rising sea levels, we rely mainly on fish and other sea foods. We may be fewer in numbers in Aotearoa but we are very colourful, traditional, authentic and elegant with our performances.
What else can you tell us about the village?
We also want the world, and particularly the industrialised countries, to see and hear that rising sea levels are already causing irreversible problems for us and our livelihood.
When did you join Pasifika?
2013 is the first Pasifika for me as Village Coordinator for the Kiribati village, after being an assistant for about five years. Kiribati as a village has been at Pasifika for nearly 10 years.
What does the community think about Pasifika?
Kam na bane ni mauri. Kiribati is committed to Pasifika Festival; we are from a large population back home and Pasifika has been great to us.
Any last words?
Our I-Kiribati songs and dances have been taught, practiced and perfected throughout generations and have specially been put on show at Pasifika for your eyes only! Feast your eyes on the graceful moves of our dancers and let us tell you our traditional stories through song and dance.
