Village Coordinator – Elena Tapuaiga
What are your village’s music highlights?
A mix of traditional Tuvaluan songs that mark significant events in Tuvalu, and sung to the ukulele and guitar, as well as the latest Tuvaluan songs. We are only open on Saturday so make the most of it!
What are some must see activities?
The traditional Tuvaluan dance fatele is a must see, and there are also demonstrations of making the fatele costumes of the Nui island style and design. See the demonstration and display on climate change and the impact of rising sea levels in Tuvalu.
What’s a ‘must-try’ dish?
Check out our Tuvaluan delicacy the fekei and our famous dish known as the ota.
What’s a little-known fact about your country or Pasifika village?
We are fortunate to utilise the village as a platform to highlight to this part of the world how global warming and the rising sea level is causing damage to the culture and existence of Tuvalu.
What else can you tell us about the village?
Handicraft making will be demonstrated and posters on the impact of rising sea levels on Tuvalu will also be displayed at the Village Coordinator’s marquee. Tuvalu is comprised of eight islands, and a different one hosts the village each year. The island to host this year is the island of Nui.
When did you join Pasifika?
We are a small community but we have been an active participant at Pasifika. I took on the role of Village Coordinator in 2011.
What does the community think about Pasifika?
It’s a great opportunity to showcase our culture and tradition, and the Tuvaluan community proudly supports and participates in the festival. We know how to awaken people's passion with our style of singing and dancing, and we are very colourful as you can see in our dancing costumes.
Any last words?
A warm welcome is extended to everyone to come and enjoy our culture and we definitely recommend seeing our traditional dancing fatele and tasting our delicious delicacy fekei. It’s also an opportunity to learn about what the developed countries have done to cause climate changes that are already impacting on our existence.
