Guidelines make everything easier

Screen Auckland is the first port of call for production companies seeking to film in the Auckland region. We are an information hub for all filming enquiries and our experienced facilitators will make the process as streamlined as possible for you.

Screen Auckland manages and issues those permits. We can also help you negotiate approvals and access for Council-owned properties and help facilitate a quick approval turnaround.

What you need to know

The Auckland Film Protocol summarises Council’s commitment to making filming in the region a positive experience for all, and the process to film in Auckland.

The type of filming you want to do, and where, will determine the approvals you require.

Film permits are issued in accordance to, and are subject to, Auckland’s bylaws. The process includes Screen Auckland obtaining approvals from relevant stakeholders.

Fees apply and will depend on your production’s requirements. Screen Auckland will outline these for you.

Filming in public spaces

Permits are required if you want to film in Auckland’s parks, regional parks, beaches, playing fields/sports grounds, footpaths, waterfront or any Council-owned buildings.

Special consent requirements may apply for sacred spaces such as Māori marae, churches, memorials and cemeteries.

Public liability insurance is required for filming on public spaces. Ask us about the options for annual or short-term insurance policies.

Filming in private property and private residences

Even if you are filming on private property, your shoot may require parking permits from council organisation Auckland Transport.

From 1 August, anyone wishing to reserve parking spaces for any vehicles associated with a film shoot in Auckland will be required to apply for a new ‘Screen Works Access Permit’. All applications to reserve parking will now be directed through Screen Auckland and the Submitica website.

For more information and application process see the Parking page.
