Auckland’s screen production sector will get a much needed boost after one of the world’s top-rated and longest running television series confirmed its return for another epic season today.
Power Rangers is a global phenomenon broadcasting to more than 150 markets with a 20 year-plus legacy. The new series Power Rangers Dino Charge will return to Auckland later this year.
The announcement comes only months after the release of the Government’s revamped New Zealand Screen Production Grant (NZSPG), which came into effect in April.
Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED) Chief Executive Brett O’Riley says the film industry incentive has been a lifeline and today’s announcement couldn’t have come at a better time.
“The return of the Power Rangers to Auckland is great news, and we look forward to welcoming the superheroes and crew back,” says Brett O’Riley.
“New Zealand’s screen industry has been through a challenging period of reform. However the sector has responded positively to changes and the flow on effects to other industry groups are yet to materialise.
“The Government listened to the concerns of Auckland’s screen sector, which contributes just under half of the national industry’s gross revenue from production and post-production activities, and its new incentives are already paying dividends.”
Power Rangers’ previous productions have contracted several hundred full and part time crew, and purchased goods and services from an extensive network of businesses across Auckland, including hotels, hire companies, construction materials and catering suppliers.
Auckland’s screen industry has established a reputation for world-class screen production talent and locations, but the Government’s ongoing support is critical to remain internationally competitive.
