Onehunga High is the first government secondary school to open a purpose built Business School in New Zealand. The Business School specialises in business-based courses at Years 9-13 and is hugely sought after by students.
The school also gave rise to the first Building and Construction School in New Zealand. Fletcher Construction Ltd supports our Building and Construction School and this initiative has helped many students with apprenticeships and employment through the construction sector.
Students are prepared for all New Zealand examinations, assessments and for tertiary education. Subjects are taught at all levels of the New Zealand curriculum. The ESOL Department provides English Language classes at all levels and curriculum support is provided in all core subjects. Onehunga High School promotes excellence in academic achievement and offers a large range of scholarships for further tertiary study.
Classroom facilities include a performing arts suite (dance, drama and music rooms), art and design rooms (photographic studio), computer and science laboratories, technical workshops, catering and hospitality facilities (including a full commercial kitchen). The school also has a library, cafeteria, cricket oval, football field, hockey turf, astro tennis courts, mountain bike track, gymnasium and fitness room.
Onehunga High School has a school population of 1400 students and 150 staff. Annually we have approximately 45 international students from around 12 different countries.
We provide our own homestay service with a full time co-ordinator employed by the school. Accommodation is with families close to school and includes a fully furnished room, all meals and laundry.
Pastoral care is provided by the Dean of International Students, Homestay Co-ordinator, Guidance Counsellors, Careers Advisor and school nurse.

How do I apply to your school to study as an international student?

You can enrol yourself or you can use an agent to enrol who works with us.
When should I apply?
You can apply at any time to enrol as an international student although our full academic year begins annually at the end of January. Placement for January is recommended by November to ensure documents are in place before the school closes for the summer holidays.
What documents do I need to provide?
Once you have filled out an enrolment we require a copy of your final school report and we may also ask for further written information about your previous academic history. We also require full information about homestay so that we can place you in a family that will meet your individual needs and interests.
After receiving your enrolment and supporting documents we issue an Offer of Place and Invoice. Upon payment of the invoice we provide a receipt and you can then apply to your nearest office for a Student Visa.
Can I study for any period of time?
We accept both long term and short term students. Students frequently come only for 4 – 6 weeks and we are able to cater for individual requirements. We have a fully staffed ESOL department with ESOL support and learning support.
Do I need to contact my homestay family before I arrive?
When your enrolment is confirmed we send you a full profile of the homestay family, including contact details. We encourage email and skype communication prior to arrival so that you can get to know your homestay family and become familiar before you arrive.
Will someone collect me from the airport?
Yes we arrange airport pick up and we pass this information on to you when we receive your flight details. We transfer you from the airport to your host family and ensure you are settled in.
What will happen on my first day at school?
You will meet with our Dean of International Students and discuss your subject choices, uniform, rules, orientation and we will buddy you up with a student from the High School who will assist you in settling in comfortably.
What extra support will I get as a new student in a new country?
Our international department has four full time staff; Director, Dean, Homestay Co-ordinator, Administrator. You can meet with any of the staff at any time. We also provide an international student room for your comfort during the day if you wish to meet with other international students. Weekly we have an international assembly and we interview you regularly to ensure you are enjoying your stay and making the most of the opportunities both in and outside the classroom. We encourage participation in co-curricular and we provide information on joining sports teams while you are studying with us.
We meet regularly with our homestay host families and ensure that you are being well supported and cared for during your stay with us.
