Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED) invest in major events, on behalf of Auckland Council, to deliver economic and social benefits for Auckland.
ATEED’s major events investment decisions are based on the level of return for Auckland and the events’ projected performance against the outcomes of Auckland’s Major Events Strategy.
ATEED takes a portfolio approach to major events, which sees the value of Auckland’s Major Events Portfolio as the sum of all the events and the combined results they bring for generating visitor nights, attendance, contribution to regional GDP and liveability – making Auckland an interesting and desirable place to live, work, visit, play, study and invest.
Since Auckland’s Major Events Strategy was approved by Auckland Council in 2011, ATEED-sponsored major events have contributed $247 million to the regional economy and generated 1,548,000 visitor nights (from 2011/12 FY – 2015/16 FY).
ATEED’s investment in Auckland’s Major Events Portfolio in the 2015/16 financial year was $9,584,516, and its investment in the 2016/17 financial year is forecast to be $8,014,534.
A list of ATEED-supported events from 1 January 2016 – 31 March 2017 is below, with details of investments that have been publicly announced included.
In keeping with the portfolio approach, ATEED does not release details of all individual investments. This is because ATEED operates in a competitive environment when bidding for events and negotiating contracts as an event host and sponsor. Sharing these details could limit an event operator’s ability to negotiate deals with commercial sponsors, suppliers and other key partners, and/or limit ATEED’s ability to bid competitively against other events cities, such as our closest competitor cities in Australia, for world-class major events.
ATEED does not invest in regional events - the Regional Events Fund is administered by Auckland Council.
Definitions of major events and regional events are available in the Auckland Council Events Policy.
