We have a major role to play in Auckland’s journey towards 2021 – a year that will be one of the most significant in our region’s modern history as events such as the 36th America’s Cup, APEC 2021, Women’s Rugby World Cup 2021, Women’s Cricket World Cup 2021, and Te Matatini kapa haka festival, put a global spotlight on our region and bring innumerable economic opportunities.

The emphasis for us is to ensure we seize the opportunities 2021 will provide to connect with global markets and showcase Auckland as an innovative, globally competitive city that attracts and retains talented and skilled people.

APEC 2021 is a year-long event culminating in Leaders’ Week in November, in Auckland. There will also be an APEC Women in the Economy Forum, and a Food Security Week/Senior Officials Meeting in Auckland during the year. APEC 2021 will be the largest event ever hosted by the Government and an unprecedented opportunity to connect Auckland businesses to the Asia-Pacific and showcase our region to the world. While government agencies are responsible for APEC 2021’s planning and delivery, ATEED has a key support role and is gearing up to ensure Auckland is ready to seize the opportunities the event will provide.

America’s Cup Events Ltd, a company owned by Emirates Team New Zealand, has overall responsibility for delivering the 36th America’s Cup. But ATEED is the lead event agency on behalf of Council and The Crown. We lead the event communications and marketing work stream, and also have a major role in the development and delivery of America’s Cup leverage and legacy projects.

Work is well underway in transforming Auckland’s waterfront so that it is ready to stage a fantastic America’s Cup, with ETNZ set up in its headquarters in Council-owned Viaduct Events Centre.
