On Friday 22 October 2021, the Government announced a support package for Auckland businesses affected by COVID-19 alert level restrictions.

This package was designed to help Auckland businesses access:

• advice and planning support
• support to implement advice and planning
• health and wellbeing support
• business community resources 

Activate Tāmaki Makaurau was set up to connect existing Auckland businesses with that support. It is an opportunity to assist the business community to navigate the current environment and build more resilient businesses by supporting them to work through tough decisions, seize future opportunities and adapt where necessary to enable businesses to thrive.

Health & Wellbeing Support

 

First Steps provides access to health and wellbeing support tailored to the many business owners across Tāmaki Makaurau that are feeling overwhelmed, isolated, and under pressure from the mental and emotional impact of ongoing COVID-19 restrictions.

When you are operating in an unbalanced world it can take its toll on anxiety levels, wellness, stress, and even impact the quality of sleep. This funding will provide you access to a range of qualified, approved health and wellbeing providers here to support business owners and leaders.

Business Advice and Implementation Grant funding applications are now closed, and as of 4pm on 24 March, we are no longer accepting new service provider registrations.

 

Business Advice and Implementation Grants

 

The success of the Activate Tāmaki Makaurau programme has seen over 10,000 applications approved for Auckland businesses receive support since registrations opened on 1 December 2021.

Due to this demand, Business Advice support (as of 4pm on 22 March) and Implementation Grant support (as on 4pm on 24 March) are now closed for funding applications.

General FAQs

Announced by the Minister of Finance and the Minister of Small Business, Activate Tāmaki Makaurau is the delivery programme for business advice and/or implementation grants, and health and wellbeing support for Auckland businesses. Activate Tāmaki Makaurau is led through Auckland Unlimited as the Regional Business Partner in the Auckland region, and supported by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE).

Tātaki Auckland Unlimited is coordinating the wider Auckland business support network in a collective approach to reach Auckland’s diverse business community, including Māori and Pacific businesses.

It is designed to support Auckland businesses through the uncertainty and impacts caused by COVID-19. This support will help businesses be more resilient in the future, support tough business decisions, improve businesses' ability to operate when COVID-19 restrictions are in place, and help businesses to seize future opportunities and productivity gains.

Auckland has spent more time under COVID-19 restrictions than other parts of New Zealand, which has had a significant and compounding impact on our businesses, particularly small to medium businesses and sole traders.

On December 1, 2021, Auckland had spent 106 days in Alert Levels 4/3, compared to 22 days for the rest of New Zealand.

Tātaki Auckland Unlimited is working closely with the wider business ecosystem in the region, including Amotai, Auckland Business Chamber, Business Events Industry Aotearoa, Employers & Manufacturers Association, Heart of the City, Hospitality New Zealand, Restaurant Association, Retail New Zealand, Tourism Industry Aotearoa, Whāriki - Māori Business Network, Pacific Business Trust, Regional Business Partner Network and supported by MBIE.

Collectively, these organisations represent many SMEs across the Auckland regional economy.

You do not need to be a member of these organisations to access Activate Tāmaki Makaurau support. 

We know that health and wellbeing support is needed to help mitigate the impacts of COVID-19 restrictions on Auckland business owners and employees. First Steps provides access to health and wellbeing support for individual business owners and managers across Tāmaki Makaurau who are feeling overwhelmed, isolated or under pressure from the mental and emotional impact of ongoing COVID-19 restrictions. First Steps is part of the Activate Tāmaki Makaurau business support programme announced by the Government in October 2021.

Businesses seeking health and wellbeing support for their workforce should apply for support through Activate Tāmaki Makaurau Business Advice and Implementation Grants.

First Steps is available to business owners and managers seeking health and wellbeing support for themselves. The programme offers a range of services including learning and development resources, webinars and podcasts, and also provides individualised professional support for business owners. Funding and Grants

We are no longer accepting new registrations for Activate Tāmaki Makaurau Business Advice as of 4pm on 17 February 2022 and Implementation Grants as of 4pm on 24 February. 

Please Note: Activate Tāmaki Makaurau funding is limited and not guaranteed until businesses have:

✓ requested a proposal/quote from a service provider,
✓ approved their proposal/quote, and
✓ had their funding application approved via email.

For businesses already registered, available funding levels are visible within the Activate Tāmaki Makaurau Portal.

Businesses must have operated within the previous Auckland Alert Level 3 boundary to be eligible to access Business Advice and/or an Implementation Grant.
