As a service and innovation oriented economy, Auckland has developed a core of specialist manufacturing industries and a talented, globally-focused service sector.

These industries and sectors are grouped into advanced industries, tradeable industries and enabling industries. Together they drive growth and create employment in Auckland.


Advanced industries

Figures as at 2015

Auckland’s technology and knowledge-intensive industries employ thousands of STEM workers, undertaking high levels of research and development to power our economic growth. They are a small but significant contributor to our regional economy. Key sectors include:

  • Technology
  • Commercial services

GDP
Despite their small size, Auckland’s advanced industries produce a higher than average GDP (5.3 per cent) compared to Auckland’s non-advanced industries.

 

Labour force
Employment in our advanced industries has grown significantly and Statistics New Zealand has reported that advanced industry workers have higher than average incomes, earning on average NZ$27,000 more a year.

 

Exports
Despite the challenging export conditions following the Global Financial Crisis, our advanced industries sector experienced a higher export growth than non-advanced industries.

Auckland’s tradeable industries produce goods and services for international markets and generate the majority of Auckland's export revenue. Key sectors include:

  • Food and beverage
  • Screen and creative

GDP
Auckland’s tradeable industries contribute over 25 per cent of our region’s economic output.

Labour force
Our tradeable industries employ 30 per cent of our workforce – over 220,000 people – and are, on average, more productive than our other industries.

Exports
Tradeable industry businesses are internationally focused and produce 63 per cent of Auckland’s total export revenue.
