Under the banner of Tiaki – Care for New Zealand, the industry has launched the Tiaki Promise, which actively encourages all visitors to experience New Zealand in a way that keeps them safe, protects the natural environment, respects all cultures and preserves the country for future generations.

Tiaki means to care for and protect in New Zealand’s native language Te Reo Māori and the Tiaki Promise is an invitation to visitors to care for New Zealand alongside Kiwis.

It is the collaborative brainchild of Air New Zealand, Tourism New Zealand, the Department of Conservation, Tourism Industry Aotearoa, Local Government New Zealand, New Zealand Māori Tourism and Tourism Holdings Ltd – all of whom were united in their belief that Aotearoa is a precious destination that needs to be protected, and that everyone who lives and travels here has a responsibility to look after it.

The Promise is the first element of the Tiaki brand to be released, with further initiatives in the works, such as a responsible camping campaign planned for later this year.

A range of materials will be provided free of charge to New Zealand tourism organisations, including a brochure and supporting video. The resources will initially be available in English, Te Reo Māori, German and Chinese, with more languages to follow.

The announcement of this initiative comes shortly after the release of the Destination AKL 2025 strategy, which also outlines the need to establish better sustainable practices in the visitor sector. Destination AKL, in combination with Tiaki – Care for New Zealand, will see great improvement in Auckland, with locals and visitors alike taking greater care to protect our remarkable region.
