Award-winning New York mixologist, Sother Teague, will be mixing drinks and sharing insights on the art of the cocktail at boutique Ponsonby speakeasy, Ante Social.
Sother was hailed as Mixologist of the Year in 2018 by Wine Enthusiast and is the creative force behind some of New York’s finest bars. He’s beverage director at New York East Village bar, Amor y Amargo and he’s a partner of New York bars Blue Quarter and Windmill. When he’s not mixing, he’s the co-host of The Speakeasy on Heritage Radio Network. He’s also a co-founder, with Ravi DeRossi from Death and Company, of Coup, a cocktail pop-up bar that donates all profits to organisations fighting against Donald Trump’s policies.
Sother’s distinctive approach to mixing drinks draws on his culinary background and understanding of flavours. So, Amor y Amargo is short on juices and syrups, and instead showcases stirred drinks relying on precisely calibrated combinations of spirits, amari, vermouth and bitters.
Sother describes himself a “hospitalitarian” – a weird militarized term, he confesses, but one which reflects his attitude: “I approach making cocktails the same way I did cooking food: Keep things simple, coax out flavours that are already inherent and present them humbly. It doesn’t matter if the drinks are good when the service is bad.”
Sother’s Ponsonby evenings promise to be full of charm, flavour and good conversation.
