Sir John Kirwan's top picks

Walk it off

Keeping up my fitness is really important and it’s nice to get outside for a walk or run around Mount Eden or One Tree Hill – I never get sick of the views from up there. My go-to for a flat walk with the dog is usually Mission Bay to St Heliers; it’s cool seeing so many people out making the most of the views, walking or running, kids on bikes, and heaps of dogs!

Best bites

For casual food I’d have to say top pick is the spicy Tantanmen (Dandan noodles) at Eden Noodles Café on Dominion Road; they do awesome dumplings too. My morning coffee is usually Café on Kohi, they also do a really good brunch, and if you’re in a rush they have great coffee and takeaway food at The Store next door, for a smoothie and housemade pastry on the go.

Modern art meets history

The TSB Wallace Arts Centre in Hillsborough is well worth a weekend visit. It’s inside the historic Pah Homestead, and they have different exhibitions on all the time, featuring some great contemporary New Zealand art. The contrast of modern art inside a heritage building just really works.

Need a laugh?

We have a great theatre and comedy scene now, with so much local talent. Fridays and Saturdays are the biggest nights at The Classic Comedy Club and it’s such a good pick me up; they’ve even got a late show if you’re a bit of a night owl.

Go the ABs!

I may be biased but you can’t top a live rugby match at Eden Park – especially if the ABs are playing. The atmosphere is so awesome, it’s easy to get to on the train, and there are some cool places in Kingsland for a drink or dinner first.
