Outdoor activities

“Hunua Ranges is an amazing place to escape without going too far from home, with plenty of short walking tracks and the Hunua Falls. If you want something more challenging though, there are heaps of longer walks and mountain bike trails too.”

Sir John Kirwan

Take a hike in the Hunua Ranges

Go tramping or mountain biking in the Hunua Ranges, Auckland’s largest native forest. Put Hunua Falls on the to-do list, a 30-metre waterfall carving through ancient volcanic rock.

Te Ara Moana – the sea-going pathway

Kayakers can take the self-guided multi-day kayak trail Te Ara Moana ‘the sea-going pathway’ from Omana Regional Park to Waharau Regional Park.

Fourforty Mountain Bike Park

Hit the trails at the expansive, gravity fuelled Fourforty Mountain Bike Park near Hunua Ranges, catering for beginner to expert riders. Bring your own ride or hire equipment onsite. Check for open dates this season.

Choose a golf course

Play a round of golf at one of the clubs in the area, ranging from courses near the city at Pakuranga and Howick to the luxury Formosa Gold Resort in Beachlands, and Windross Farm in Ardmore.

Walk or cycle along Tamaki River

For a coastal walk close to the city, walk or bike along the Pakuranga Rotary shared path, a relatively flat trail with a paved path along the Tamaki River – perfect for beginner cyclists, dog walkers or those with prams.
