Food and wine

“Check out Fortieth & Hurstmere in Takapuna – it’s a cool little laneway of cafés and restaurants that opened last year. My pick is probably the wood-fired pizzas from Dante’s Pizza.”

Sir John Kirwan

Brunch by the bay

Brunch where the locals brunch at a café along the coast stretching from Torbay to Milford. The East Coast Bays has a busy but laidback café scene, from corner coffee spots to sunny courtyards that fill up with regulars (and their dogs) every weekend. Walk off your eggs bene with a beach walk afterwards.

Puhoi Valley cheese shop and café

Auckland favourite: artisanal cheeses and ice cream at the Puhoi Valley shop and café. Share (or don’t share) an antipasto or cheese platter in the open outdoor dining area, start the day with a big brekkie, or cool off with a sorbet. Choose a few cellar-ripened cheeses to take home.

Takapuna’s dining scene

Eat out at one of Takapuna’s stylish restaurants – the dining scene here continues to grow, with new bars, cafés and restaurants joining older favourites. Have brunch, lunch or dinner overlooking the beach or bring your appetite down the cobbled shared laneway at Fortieth & Hurstmere for gourmet pizza, pasta, burgers, fish and chips and even Colombian-style barbecue.

A vineyard lunch in Matakana

Linger over a long vineyard lunch and wine tastings at one of the boutique wineries in Matakana wine country. If no one’s keen to drive, join a wine tour and visit a handful of different wineries – all complete with beautiful scenery.

Top-notch fish and chips at Takapuna Beach

If you’re on a budget, nothing beats fish and chips on the beach – and we’ve got plenty of all of those. Try the fresh F&C from The Store at Takapuna Beach Café (get in before 6pm) or find a local at any of the seaside suburbs and settle in for sunset.
