A dedicated R&D kitchen onsite is where chef and owner Gianpaolo Grazioli’s wondrous creations are dreamt up and honed to perfection, while in the shop, friendly serving staff take customers through the one-of-a-kind menu, with tastings as you go. Each order is then meticulously crafted by hand in the busy kitchen.
Premium ingredients are sourced for Giapo’s creations, including the best of New Zealand’s bounty of produce: fruit, herbs, nuts, milk, cream and more. As well as all-time favourites that never leave the menu (such as the legendary hazelnut and chocolate dream that is the Giapo Buono), there are always seasonal flavours that express the terroir of different parts of New Zealand.
The ice cream itself is memorable. But it’s what accompanies it that makes Giapo an unforgettable experience. Each flavour is served with specially matched edible adornments, all made from scratch in the kitchen. Then there are options from deluxe chocolate-crafted cups and cones and selfie cones to fantastical toppings such as solid gilded chocolate hearts and icons of New Zealand, including the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa’s Colossal Squid and Auckland’s Sky Tower, paid homage to in chocolate.
