A trip to the market in Auckland is about more than restocking the cupboards.

It’s about experiencing the sights, smells, tastes and culture of our city.

Luckily, there’s no shortage of incredible markets to choose from – enough to experience a different one each weekend for the whole summer.

Here are six of our favourites to get you started:

  1. Clevedon Village Farmers Market − Sundays 8.30am to 1.00pm
Head out for a scenic Sunday drive and experience an abundance of freshly picked produce, meats, locally made cheeses, yoghurts and chutneys – not to mention great coffee, pastries and pony rides for the kids.

  2. Te Atatu Night Markets − various Fridays throughout summer 5.00pm to 9.00pm
An array of food trucks offering mouth-watering street food including handmade dumplings, steamed buns, homemade burgers and doughnuts. Enjoy locally made artisan products, live music and an inviting family vibe. Bring a rug for a Friday night picnic.

  3. Otara Markets − Saturdays 6.00am to 12.00pm
Immerse yourself in South Auckland’s cultural diversity. You’ll find cheap fresh fruit and vegetables, delicious Māori hangi, Pacific chop suey and Chinese pork buns - a feast for the senses.

  4. La Cigale French Market − Saturdays 8.00am to 1.30pm, Sundays 9.00am to 1.30pm
Offering a real taste of France, this long-standing Auckland market is now in two locations, Parnell and Britomart. There’s fresh produce, meats, French and Italian cheeses, freshly baked pastries and bread loaves hot out of the oven. Authentic French fare in the heart of Auckland.

  5. Matakana Markets − Saturdays 8.00am to 1.00pm
This has been a favourite with Aucklanders for over 10 years. Head north to the Matakana Coast and enjoy a variety of locally made bread, cheese, spreads and more. There’s also fresh produce, plenty of treats to sample and live music to enjoy over a coffee in the sun.

  6. Avondale Markets − Sundays 5.00am to 12.00pm
This is Auckland’s biggest one-day market. It’s where the locals come to do their weekly fruit and vegetable shopping. You’ll find stalls selling different fruits, vegetables, herbs and fresh spices. It’s great for Chinese, Indian and Pacific ingredients. Enjoy the colours of the produce and some great vendors as well.
