The inaugural Elemental AKL is coming to Auckland.

Throughout July, more than 50 free and ticketed events will transform eateries and bars, theatres, public spaces and more, across Tāmaki Makaurau. The following provides a taster of some of the events taking place across the festival’s themes of light, food, entertainment and culture.

InMotion Matariki

In Motion Matariki

A magical all-wheels illuminated parade in celebration of Matariki: the Māori New Year. Gather at Silo Park to take part in this inclusive parade around Wynyard Quarter. Decorate your wheels to the theme of Matariki, and join Touch Compass on a journey of discovery through the urban maze of Auckland’s waterfront. Enjoy a mix of sensory installations, art installations, and live performance along the route, before a presentation of Touch Compass’ new aerial piece, Te Ranga Ika, on The Gantry in Silo Park. After the parade, grab a bite to eat from one the local food trucks in Silo Park.

Why you should go

InMotion Matariki is a free family-friendly event welcoming to everyone, regardless of age, culture, and ability. Last year, Lucid Dreambike led the parade in a giant tamure (snapper) float. This year, the star of the parade will be a giant whale which will navigate Wynyard Quarter.

The event starts from Silo Park at 5:30pm on Saturday, 6 July.

Bring along whatever your choice of wheels may be whether a bike, scooter, wheelchair, billy-cart, skateboard, unicycle, or power chair. While wheels are encouraged, they are not mandatory. You are welcome to enjoy InMotion Matariki on foot.

Craft’d Wine and Spirits Festival

Elemental Cratf'd Wine and Spirits Festival

The Craft'd Wine+ Spirits Festival is a celebration of NZ independent wineries and distilleries. There will be over 35 independent wineries together in one superb location. They will be showcasing the best of small-production wines from throughout New Zealand, and for the first time ever, bringing artisanal distilleries to the scene.

Why you need to go

The festival includes masterclasses to learn from New Zealand wine gurus and even discover how to turn mash into a fine spirit! The event also features vertical tasting sessions (flights of the same wine from different years), to help the wine curious explore how climate, terroir and winemaker nuances can dramatically change the look, bouquet and taste of wine.

For foodies, this year's festival offers a 'Club Lounge' for relaxing and enjoying tapas and wine pairing, as well as engaging in one-on-one chats with the winemakers. Just want coffee and a bite? Some of Auckland's best food trucks will be on the scene for you to sample.

The festival will be held at GridAKL – 12 Madden Street, Wynyard Quarter on Sunday, 21 July from 12.30pm to 6.30pm.
