Seaweek – Ontogeny – Ocean VR Project

Mairangi Arts Centre is proud to present ‘Ontogeny’, our very first Virtual Reality exhibition.

With support from Creative Communities Auckland, and in collaboration with the Goat Island Marine Discovery Centre, ‘Ontogeny’ aims to give visitors an understanding of the fragile balance of life in Aotearoa’s marine ecosystem and inspire them to engage with marine conservation in a deeper way.

New Zealand supports one the world’s most extensive and plentiful coastlines; yet the world beneath the waves is alien to many. Species that were once plentiful and abundant are now rare, relicts, and memories.

The need for strong conservation measures has never been so dire, but conservation requires familiarity to generate support, hence the conundrum presented to marine conservationists: how to generate familiarity with a world that is inherently alien to so many?

Teasing apart the complex interactions that characterise ecosystems is the job of scientists, however communicating such findings to a wider public, beyond the scientific community, can be challenging.

Join us for the closing day events to round off Sea Week on Sunday, 11 March.

Kicking things off at 11am:
- Panel Talk with the team behind Ontogeny
- Deakin Palmer, videographer/artist
- Benn’jamin Hannsjamin, PhD candidate in marine biology, University of Auckland
- Jērome Kavanagh, International Taonga Pūoro Artist, (sound design)
- Angela Suh, Producer.

Followed by 1pm performance by Jērome Kavanagh.
