For the pinnacle of Asian contemporary dance, look no further than Chinese iconoclasts TAO Dance Theater. Awarded Venice Biennale’s prestigious Silver Lion for Dance in 2023 and touring non-stop between Europe, New York, London and Australia before Auckland, the company delivers extraordinary choreography through their unique circular motion system – a pioneering body movement technique developed by TAO’s founders and grounded in Eastern philosophy and gender-neutrality.
Presenting the high-contrast 13th and 14th works in choreographer Tao Ye’s renowned ‘Numerical Series’, this vibrant, meditative and explosive double-bill announces the arrival of a genuine international dance powerhouse to the opening week of the Festival. With acclaimed appearances at Lincoln Center and Sydney Opera House to their name, TAO’s Kiri Te Kanawa Theatre season is a one-off opportunity to witness, live and in peak form, some of the best dancers in the world.
