The Auckland Philharmonic Philharmonia Orchestra presents Verdi’s beloved Il Trovatore at the Auckland Town Hall with a host of international singers and the New Zealand Opera Chorus, promising an evening of inspiring operatic and orchestral music.
Picture this: Spain is racked by civil war. The Conte di Luna courts Leonora, but she is in love with the gypsy troubadour Manrico, a soldier on the opposing side. The Conte's forces capture Manrico by using his mother, Azucena, as bait. To free her lover, Leonora makes a fatal promise to marry the Conte. But Azucena is haunted by a terrible mistake from decades past.
With all the high soap drama you expect from opera, even for Verdi, Il Trovatore is full of memorable arias, including the famous 'Anvil Chorus' and 'Di quella pira', just’, just two of the stirring highlights.
As for the cast, it’s as if they were plucked from the heavens, there are so many stars onstars on stage, a veritable constellation of singers who are regulars at all the top European opera houses, while Giordano Bellincampi is the perfect conductor for an opera of such remarkable dramatic power.
