What is Elemental AKL?
This is the first year of Elemental AKL, a 31-day festival of light, cuisine, entertainment, and culture – a region-wide winter festival in Auckland. Elemental AKL is delivered by Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED), Auckland’s economic development agency.
There is a captivating programme of more than 40 free and ticketed events transforming eateries and bars, theatres, parks and islands, public spaces and more. Audiences will be energised and entertained with a diverse array of thought-provoking new works, crowd-pleasers, and interactive, immersive events. Elemental AKL will inspire, delight and excite - it is a festival for everyone.
Where is Elemental AKL held?
There are more than 40 events taking place in public spaces, venues, theatres, restaurants & cafes, parks and more, across the Auckland region. From Matakana village, to Great Barrier Island, Albert Park and Papakura – you'll find something happening in your neighbourhood. What events are on during Elemental AKL?
Elemental AKL Festival Hub
The Elemental AKL Hub will be the beating heart of the festival with entertainment, food and unique interactive experiences from 1-28 July in Aotea Square.
Take a spin on the Aotea Square Ice Rink and Ice Slide and experience your very own winter playground. Enjoy an exciting variety of events on the ice rink, including DJ nights, themed parties, skating lessons and much more.
When it’s time to get toasty again, Box in the Square Bar & Café will be just next door with tasty morsels, and a range of hot and cold beverages, including craft beers and mulled wine. Grab a table in the newly covered courtyard, enjoy a live band, and soak up the atmosphere of the Square till late.
The Auckland Live Digital Stage will be programmed with interactive activities for the young (and young-at-heart) throughout the day, and exciting content and stories from across the Auckland region each evening.
Auckland Night Markets join the festivities every night, immersing festival goers with a delicious selection of culinary delights from around the world.
For an extra special private dining experience book one of the winter Snugs. These geodesic domes will have comfortable furniture, blankets and heaters - the perfect spot for sharing an intimate winter treat with a small group.
For larger groups, each evening the inflatable Snow Dome will transform into a unique function space, perfect for cocktails or sit-down dining for up to 30 people.

When does Elemental AKL start and finish?
Elemental AKL takes place over the whole month of July 2019 (1 – 31 July) with events occurring at different times during the month. There will be some events and activations that take place for the whole month.
Is it family friendly?
Elemental AKL includes a mix of family friendly events and restricted access events. Whether you are after family fun or looking for more grown-up entertainment we have you covered.
On the search page, click 'More' to access the 'Family Friendly' search function to discover which events are suitable for the whole family. Individual event listings will also include these details.
How do I buy tickets?
Individual event listings specify whether they are ticketed or free. The event listing page will provide a link to purchase tickets to specific events, as required. There are many free events available during the festival which will not require tickets or registration to attend.
What about the weather?
Most events will take place rain or shine. Planning for all weather will make sure you have fun regardless of the weather. In the event of severe weather, look at the event organiser’s Facebook event page or website for updates, cancellations or date-changes.

Where is the lost property?
Elemental AKL is a festival produced in collaboration with different event organisers. The organisers will look after lost property for their specific event so it is best to get in touch with them directly using the information on their website/booking page. Alternatively, you can email us.
Where should I park?
See the event listings for detail on the best way to get to your event, including accessible parking options. Where possible we encourage you to use public transport, use Journey Planner to find the quickest route to your event.
What is Elemental Feast?
Take your taste buds on an unforgettable culinary tour of Auckland’s world-class food scene with Elemental Feast. Fine dining restaurants, cafés, food trucks, bars and pubs are plating up a unique festival dish or menu using ingredients sourced from the Auckland region and inspired by the elements. Check back here from June 1 to find out where you’ll be dining this winter.
What is Matariki Festival?
Matariki Festival is a celebration of the Māori new year in Tāmaki Makaurau. Experience te ao Māori through stories, entertainment, discussions, performance and art. Herald the Māori new year alongside the 2019 host iwi at the Matariki Dawn Karakia in Auckland Domain and see their story in lights on the Auckland Harbour Bridge.
Learn about the stars and traditional navigation for Matariki On The Move and watch the skies fill with kites of all shapes and sizes during Manu Aute Kite Day. Witness exhilarating live performances at Te Taumata Kapa Haka and dance the night away under the Matariki stars while enjoying a stellar line-up of musical talent at Te Korakora on Federal.

How do I get involved?
Our event submissions for 2019 have closed and we are no longer accepting submissions to participate in this year’s festival. If you are interested in being involved as an event organiser, commercial partner or volunteer, contact us by email.
