Scenic day trips around AucklandDid you know that islands and countryside are all within an hour's drive of Auckland City? There's no better way to experience this diverse region than with a wee day trip, from a beach-lover's getaway on the Matakana Coast to spotting rare wildlife on Tiritiri Matangi Island.
Devonport
Whiz across to Devonport by ferry for an incredible half-day outing! This charming coastal town on the North Shore offers sweeping 360-degrees of the harbour, and is affordable way to get on the water. Once in Devonport, bop along Victoria Road for eateries, boutiques and local gems like Devonport Chocolates. For even more views, walk from the village to Mount Victoria or North Head – the summit views are well worth the trip!
Matakana
Just one hour from Auckland, Matakana is a popular little village that sits on the beautiful Matakana Coast. Be sure to visit on Saturday to browse the famous village market and grab a bite at one of the local eateries. Matakana is also famous for its boutique wineries and pristine coastline – how's vino and beach-hopping sound?
Tawharanui
This slice of paradise has been enjoyed for more than 800 years, with evidence of five pā (fortified settlements) and sacred places around the peninsula. Only one hour's drive from the city, Tāwharanui is a famous beach that doubles as a wildlife sanctuary. Spot stingrays and snapper living happily in the reserve-protected waters or stroll along the pristine stretch of white sand to find your perfect swimming spot. In the coastal forest, listen to the native birdsong and look out for a rare pair of takahē.
Waiheke Island
This is one of the most popular day trips in Auckland for good reason. Take the 40-minute ferry from the city centre for a full day of wine-tasting, beaches, art walks and more. If you love wine, exploring the vineyards is a must-do. But it pays to explore the lush scenery and village, too, which boast pristine beaches, art galleries, ziplining and more.
Tiritiri Matangi
Tiritiri Matangi is a unique island refuge for native flora and fauna, home to 71 bird species, including the iconic kiwi, the world’s smallest penguin (kororā or little penguin), and the once-thought extinct takahē. Meet the island’s wildlife and marvel at the splendour of nature along one of its many trails. For a full circuit, take the three-hour loop track with views out to Rangitoto island, Hauturu/Little Barrier Island, and Coromandel. You can ferry over from the city centre in 75 minutes.
