Weaving Workshop

📅 Sunday 01 March

🕐 11:00AM - 12:30PM - Session 3 |

Ngāti Whātua weavers are contemporary and traditional artists from Tāmaki Makaurau and Kaipara, renowned for their mastery of raranga using harakeke to create kākahu, sculptural works, and large-scale tukutuku for marae and public spaces. Their work weaves together history, whakapapa, and place, expressing deep connections to whenua, community, and cultural continuity, with whatu understood as a living practice of storytelling and knowledge transmission rather than simply craft.

Drawing on native materials, established patterns such as Aramoana, and contemporary collaborative approaches, their work features in significant architectural and public art commissions across the region, while ongoing wānanga and collective practice ensure weaving knowledge is shared, sustained, and visible across generations.
