Beginning before the sun has risen, we'll mark this significant moment together and learn more about how Matariki connects us to our past, present, future and natural world around us - mātauranga generously shared by Matua Rob Small. With a new-found appreciation for the whetū (stars), send your wishes up to Hiwa-i-te-rangi through fire and smoke, and acknowledge those who have passed on through Pōhutakawa. With no light except that from the fire and the gently rising sun it's a deeply special way to herald in the beginning of a new year.
Following the ceremony we'll share in a taste of our very own heritage kūmara, grown on site and cooked in a hangi. We will provide a few other small offerings to keep bellies full, including pastries and bread donated from local bakeries, and coffee - BYO keep cup.
