Look below the clouds from just about anywhere in central Auckland to spot the city’s geological and archaeological jewel, Maungakiekie (One Tree Hill). Though bounded by several inner-city suburbs – Epsom, Ellerslie and Remuera – Greenlane’s highest point has long-reaching views that sweep 360 degrees and as far out as Rangitoto Island.
Maungakiekie, now surrounded by Cornwall Park, is one of the largest and most significant pā (fortified village) in Tāmaki Makaurau – and the largest in Aotearoa. Climb atop the mighty maunga to see remnants of terraces and pits dating back to the 17th century that served thousands of Māori who called this place home. And it’s no wonder why. Second to Rangitoto, Maungakiekie is one of the largest of the 53 volcanoes scattered across the city.
Walk to the summit from Cornwall Park or drive to a car park just a 10 minutes' walk away. Watch the sun cast its final glow over the city and wander around the iconic obelisk at its crown, commissioned by the late Sir John Logan Campbell as a memorial to Māori. It was Sir Campbell who gifted the parcel of land to the public in 1901.
Cornwall Park spills from the top of Maungakiekie, with green pasture and walking trails spanning some 172 hectares. That’s right – it's also a working urban farm, home to hundreds of sheep and even lambs come springtime.
Spend a few hours exploring the leafy grounds, let the kids run around at the playground or set up lunch at a picnic table or BBQ. Want to rest after a day out? Sip a coffee or grab a bite at one of several on-site eateries, including a bistro and laid-back café. After the sun sets, catch a star-lit planetarium show at the Stardome Observatory in the park domain.
Away from the hustle and bustle, there are charming cafes and eateries tucked in and around the neighbourhood. Get your brunch on before a walk at Cornwall Park or head to Pastrami & Rye for some seriously good American-style deli fare.
Bargain hunters can find deals for days at Dress Smart, a large shopping complex in nearby Onehunga with more than 100 outlet stores.
Greenlane and its surrounds host a wide range of activities, from golfing to major thoroughbred races at Ellerslie Racecourse. Keep an eye out for national expos and foodie festivals hosted at Auckland Showgrounds, which hosts more than 140 events each year.
