The South Auckland suburb of Papakura adores its iconic theatre and community cinema – and for good reason. Hawkins Theatre, which opened in 1990, was named to honour former Papakura mayor George Hawkins and his vision to bolster the local community with performing arts.
Step inside the Italianate-esque building to experience Hawkins’ dream-turned-reality. Today, Hawkins Theatre is home to the Hawkins Youth Theatre Company, a popular programme for 8- to 18-year-olds, as well as community events, live comedy, music and twice-weekly film screenings. Grab some affordable movie tickets (and popcorn) before sinking into one of 270 ruby-red seats in the theatre. Enjoy a movie screening from a wide range of genres – though you’ll find the theatre has a soft spot for New Zealand and arthouse flicks.
Getting there Te huarahi ki reira
Hawkins Theatre is 25-25 minutes by car from the city centre and 12 minutes from Manukau City, accessible from the southern and northern motorways. There is plenty of free on-site parking.
