Best beaches

“Grab your surfboard and head to Pakiri Beach for the day, or better yet, the whole weekend. This has to be one of Auckland’s best beaches – perfect white sand, heaps of room to spread out, and awesome views.”

Sir John Kirwan

Tāwharanui Beach

The long stretch of white sand at Tāwharanui Beach sits between green parkland and sparkling blue sea and has long been a favourite weekend destination for Aucklanders. Pack a picnic and set yourself up for a day of sun, sand and surf. If you’ve never been, think idyllic, Instagrammable beach beauty.

Takapuna Beach

Just a 10-minute drive from the city centre, take time out at Takapuna Beach on Auckland’s North Shore. Kids are loving the new playground, and if you get a bit too much sun, cool down at one of the cafés, restaurants or shopping boutiques right across from the beach. Check out the markets on Sunday mornings from 6am till midday for fresh foods, flowers, jewellery and clothing.

Pakiri Beach

Find a little piece of paradise at Pakiri Beach, with clear waters edged by over 14 kilometres of pristine white sands. Feel the sea air on your face with a guided horse ride along the beach for a unique experience with friends or family. Stay overnight in the campground or hire a bach for an easy weekend getaway without the long drive.

Orewa Beach

With a summer holiday vibe, you wouldn’t know Orewa Beach is only 20 minutes from downtown Auckland. It’s perfect for a family day out, with playgrounds, safe swimming and heaps of water activities, including kayaking, kitesurfing and windsurfing.

Cheltenham Beach, Devonport

Catch the ferry to Devonport and take the flat 25-minute walk around to Cheltenham Beach. This sheltered bay is a good option for a half-day trip from the city, set among the beautiful Victorian-era villas Devonport is famous for.

Omaha Beach

Omaha Beach is a wide stretch of white sand with beautiful views out to the Hauraki Gulf islands. It’s less remote than some others in the area, with hundreds of holiday homes – perfect for a weekend away – and there's even a golf course. It's excellent for swimming, paddle boarding, kayaking and surfing, and lifeguards are on duty over summer.
