Get your mum on board with a Hauraki Blue High Tea Cruise. Sail for two hours around the beautiful Hauraki Gulf, with gorgeous views of the surrounding islands and city skyline, then sit down to a selection of savoury and sweet treats. Choose from a mid-morning or afternoon cruise.
Being a mum is a difficult job, so some pampering is the perfect way to say thank you. Choose a relaxing health or beauty treatment at one of Auckland’s day spas – try East Day Spa or So Spa at Sofitel in the city for an ultimate luxury experience, or indulge in traditional Japanese treatments at Ikoi in Takapuna.
Hop on a ferry to Waiheke Island and treat your mum to a food and wine experience at one of the many wineries on the island, or go all out with a guided wine tour. Alternatively, drive north to Matakana to sip wine at superb boutique vineyards and walk the outdoor sculpture trail at Brick Bay Wines and Sculpture Trail.
You and mum will be feeling fab with a relaxing glamping package under the stars. Be tucked away in your own treehouse at Castaway Resorts on the south-west coast and take a luxurious outdoor bath overlooking the sea. If your mother isn’t the outdoor type, treat her to a night or two at a B&B in Matakana, Kumeu or Clevedon.
All mothers get free entry to Stardome Observatory and Planetarium on this special day. Gaze up at the stars and watch a Planetarium film at the 360-degree dome, or check out The Autumn Night Sky show to admire the stars and constellations visible in the sky. Make sure you book ahead.
Pack a picnic and head west. With 250 kilometres of walking tracks through lush native forest, the Waitakere Ranges are just the place for a bit of bonding time, complete with the beauty of the west’s rugged coastline and unique black-sand beaches. If you’re after a picture-perfect white-sand beach, drive north to Tāwharanui Regional Park or Pakiri Beach.
Forget the flowers and opt for tickets to a show as a special gift. ASB Waterfront Theatre is welcoming the acclaimed play Amadeus until 17 May, beloved musical West Side Story is coming to Auckland’s Civic theatre in July, and Matilda the Musical is here in August. Tickets are still available, but get in quick.
Make the most the weekend and escape to one of Auckland’s emerald islands in the Hauraki Gulf. Great Barrier Island is perfect to celebrate with an entire weekend with its rugged untouched beauty, peaceful environment and natural hot pools. Closer to the city, Tiritiri Matangi Island, Rotoroa Island or Rangitoto are a great day-trip escapes. Admire endangered bird species, discover beaches, admire the views and stretch your legs in these conservation sanctuaries.
Start with brunch on Federal Street – check out Al Brown’s Depot or Federal Delicatessen – then head to High Street’s boutiques for some designer shopping. Stop for a sweet treat at Milse, Giapo or Miann before a walk through the Viaduct Harbour, or wander through the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki if the weather’s not at its best. Finish with dinner at one of Britomart or Wynyard Quarter’s many stylish eateries.
Go back in time at the Howick Historical Village and spoil your mum with delicious, dainty food and drinks for the Mother’s Day History and High Tea afternoon on Saturday 13 May. There’s also live music and song, as well as a guest speaker sharing stories from the past. For a more modern experience, indulge in champagne and delectable bites at Rydges Hotel or Pullman Hotel on Sunday. Be sure to book.
