The suburb of Mt Eden is unmissable, in both senses of the word. Firstly you can’t help but spot it, thanks to the enormous grassy dome that is Maungawhau Mt Eden, the dormant volcano which sits at the heart of this area. But secondly, with its great mix of interesting and unique places to explore and enjoy, it’s definitely worth spending some quality time here .
Just as it does today, the area has always played an important role in the Tāmaki Makaurau region. The maunga (mountain) itself, once served as a significant pā (fortified settlement) and was inhabited by several different iwi (tribes) over many years. Look out for the occupation terraces etched into the landscape and make sure to respect the areas indicated as tapu (sacred).
After European settlers arrived, the surrounding land was briefly used for farming before being divided into residential plots, with stately homes built for local professionals. A stroll around the tree-lined streets will reveal many of these character villas are still in situ today.
The maunga itself is always busy with locals getting their daily exercise on its slopes, and tourists making their way to the summit to take in the fantastic 360 degree views of the city.
Down on the ground, Mt Eden village, which runs along Mt Eden Road, on the South side of the maunga, hosts a row of great cafes and specialty shops. From jewellers to bookshops, galleries, florists and more, there’s lots to browse, in between stopping for coffees, sweet and savoury treats and gelato.
If your tastebuds are calling for something a little spicier, then head along to the other main foodie destination in this area, Dominion Road (which runs parallel to Mt Eden Road, a few blocks to the West). It’s packed with a variety of good value Asian eateries to choose from, and in most instances you can walk straight in and enjoy a hot meal within minutes!
Finally, no description of this neighbourhood is complete without a mention of the mighty Eden Park, New Zealand’s National Stadium and a regular home to big sporting events and major music concerts. When there’s an event on, it’s a great place to immerse yourself among passionate local fans and feel the vibrant spirit of this city.

Mt Eden is a short drive from the city or you can catch the 27H, 27T or 27W buses from Britomart.

There are several good pubs in this neighbourhood which are great for a casual drink, but they get very busy when there’s a game on at Eden Park!
