Take a small break from the colourful and energetic celebration and visit the Central City Library. The library has a dedicated parent’s room, ice cold water running from the water fountain and lockable charging stations for your phones so you can continue taking photos and videos of the Diwali Festival. Be inspired by the specially curated book display and expand your knowledge with short documentaries on the big screen. Their librarians will also be delivering a special Diwali Storytime and a Nokshi Katha Workshop. See more events below.

Auckland Central City Library is located at 44 to 46 Lorne Street, just behind Aotea Square and a short walk from Queen Street. Exhibition: The Love of Indian Cinemas at Diwali Over the Years

Explore the vibrant connection between Diwali and Bollywood in this special exhibition. Featuring iconic film posters and stories, discover how cinema became a beloved part of Diwali tradition from festive theatre outings to blockbuster releases. Presented in collaboration with Forum Films NZ Ltd.

Join us for a special Diwali edition of Storytime, where children will be treated to enchanting Indian folktales that celebrate culture, kindness and festive joy.

Saree Draping Workshop

Dates: Saturday 11 October, 2 - 3pm

Venue: Ground Floor Makerspace

Discover the elegance of the saree in this hands-on Diwali workshop led by Sneha Nitin Saini, fashion stylist and entrepreneur. Learn traditional and modern draping styles, try them yourself and go in the draw to win double passes to a new Bollywood blockbuster!

Sounds of India: Raga & Rhythm Youth Band 

Dates: Saturday 11 October, 3:15pm - 4:15pm

Venue: Ground Floor Event Space

Celebrate Diwali with a vibrant concert of Indian music, blending Raga, folk, devotional and Bollywood styles. Performed by the talented Raga & Rhythm Youth Band, this showcase features sitars, violins, and tabla in a joyful fusion of North and South Indian traditions.

Dates: Sunday 12 October, 3:15pm - 4:15pm

Celebrate Diwali with the acclaimed Basant Madhur Ensemble, featuring three generations of Indian classical musicians. Enjoy a one-hour performance of tabla, sitar, violin, and harmonium in a joyful blend of tradition and innovation.

Nokshi Kotha: Communal Embroidery Workshop

Dates: Sunday 12 October, 12:00pm - 3:00pm

Venue: Maker Space

Take a mindful pause this Diwali with Nokshi Kotha, a communal embroidery workshop inspired by Bengali tradition. No experience needed—drop in anytime to stitch your story into a shared quilt, guided by artists in a calm, welcoming space.

Colouring Calm: Mandala Art for All

Celebrate the spirit of Diwali through colour and calm with our self-guided Mandala Colouring activity. All are warmly invited to participate, and all materials are provided.
