Matiatia Bay, Waiheke Island
Sculpture on the Gulf returns to Waiheke Island for its 11th edition, running from 26 February to 29 March 2027. Established in 2003, it has become one of New Zealand’s most distinctive outdoor art exhibitions.
Co-curated by Heather Galbraith and Benjamin Work, The Ocean Remembers the Shore draws on Waiheke’s history as Te Motu Ārai Roa, the long sheltering island, and on the relationship between land, ocean and the memories held between them. Along 2.5 kilometres of the Matiatia Coastal Walkway, 30 artists and projects respond to ideas of whakapapa, memory, shelter and our connection to the natural environment. The works are encountered on foot, against the changing backdrop of the Hauraki Gulf.
Tickets: adult admission $25, with free entry for children under 15. Combined ferry, bus and exhibition tickets are $96 per adult or $208 for a family.
Presented by Perpetual Guardian and Waiheke Art Gallery. Proudly supported by Tātaki Auckland Unlimited on behalf of Auckland Council Events.

Local tip
He tīwhiri mō te rohe
Make a day of it. Catch the ferry from Auckland (combined tickets include return ferry travel and the sculpture bus), and wear comfortable walking shoes, as the 2.5 km Matiatia Coastal Walkway is best explored on foot. Bring a hat, sunscreen and a water bottle, and allow time to stop and take in the views of the Hauraki Gulf. Afterwards, stay on the island and explore Waiheke’s local galleries, cafes and restaurants.

Getting there is part of the experience. Fullers360, Official Transport Partner, offers combined tickets including return ferry travel, sculpture bus transport and exhibition entry. For a first on the water, look out for Evan Woodruffe’s 20-metre artwork Swell, wrapped around the Tōrea ferry for the duration of the exhibition.
