Join us for a special Tāmaki Untold Matariki kōrero bringing together two Māori creatives, Deane-Rose Ngatai-Tua (Ngāti Porou, Waikato-Tainui) and Te Awanui Rangi Clark (Ngāpuhi). In this intimate conversation, they will explore how whakapapa, identity, and creative practice are expressed in urban environments.
Grounded in the spirit of Matariki – a time of reflection, remembrance, and renewal – this session offers insight into the ways Māori creatives are shaping contemporary narratives and carrying stories forward into the future.
Deane-Rose Ngatai-Tua (Ngāti Porou, Waikato-Tainui) is a creative and writer based in Tāmaki Makaurau. She grew up in Rānui and lives in Kelston, West Auckland with her husband and two tamāhine. Deane describes herself as urban Māori and has followed a Māori medium education pathway. She studied design and visual arts at Unitec and currently works as an urban Māori consultant for her pakihi Uia Te Kura.
Te Awanui A Rangi Teresa Clark (Ngāpuhi) is at AUT studying Animation, Visual Effects, Game Design and Māori Media & Animated Drawing. As she writes of her animation practice: “Animation like Steven Universe, the Studio Ghibli movies or Adventure Time helped me in my darkest moments, so ever since primary school I knew that I wanted to go into animation. I wanted to be able to create something for other kids like me that they could love and find escapism in”.
Tāmaki untold: conversations celebrating the taonga, stories and creativity of Auckland.
