Sculptures, food and markets
Wander the one kilometre trail of gardens and sculptures at the Kaipara Coast Sculpture Gardens, just a 45-minute drive north-west. Or book in to visit the Gibbs Sculpture Farm in Kaipara Harbour and see the 20-year collection of sculptures from internationally renowned artists.
Visit the Kaukapakapa Village Market on the third Sunday of the month for fresh local produce, handmade cakes and pastries, and gourmet chocolates. Take a cooking workshop at the Kaipara Coast Plant Centre or head to one of the local cafés for a bite to eat.
The great outdoors
Hit the trails on a mountain bike or by foot at Ātiu Creek Regional Park or take a cruise on Kaipara Harbour.
Into hiking? Get a taste of farmland, forest and coast on the three-day self-guided walk, Kaipara2Kaipara, or head to the Mt Auckland Atuanui Walkway and tramp through native forest for spectacular views from the 305 metre-high summit. You’ll need to have a reasonable level of fitness to take these on.
For a great picnic spot, head to Omeru Reserve. You’ll find barbecues, a Māori pā (village) site and – a short walk away – a popular swimming spot at the base of Omeru Falls.
