Grounded in the kaupapa of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, these sessions invite tamariki, whānau, manuhiri, and those beginning a journey into te ao Māori to gather and connect. Guided by the values of taiao ora, tangata ora, Te Wharekura offers an immersive place to slow down, listen, and reflect. In this unique waterfront setting where taiao and tangata meet, you’ll be guided through the story of Matariki, not just as a cluster of stars, but as a living system of knowledge that connects us to the whenua, the waters, and the skies above.
Through gentle storytelling and shared reflection, you’ll explore the deeper meaning of Matariki, a time to remember those who have passed, celebrate the present, and set intentions for the future, while learning the roles of each whetū within Te Kāhui o Matariki. From rain and wind to food sources and waterways, these kōrero weave together environmental understanding with cultural tradition, with a special focus on Waipuna-ā-rangi, the star of rain and renewal.
While uniquely grounded in te ao Māori, Matariki also connects to a wider human story, a shared relationship with the stars across cultures, inviting us all to look up, reflect, and feel part of something bigger.
