Nestled in the heart of the lush Waitakere Ranges, the Arataki Visitor Centre is a warm and welcoming gateway to the natural wonders of Auckland's western region. Serving as both an educational hub and a starting point for outdoor enthusiasts, the Centre plays an important role in connecting visitors with the area's pristine beauty and rich cultural heritage.
Upon your arrival to Arataki, you’ll be greeted with an 11m kauri pou (post) that depicts the ancestors of iwi Te Kawerau ā Maki, carved with care by tribal members. This reaffirms their mana and guardianship of the ‘Great Forest of Tiriwā' (Waitākere Ranges). The pou is a true masterpiece and one of the largest of its kind in New Zealand.
Arataki Visitor Centre offers a wealth of information on the numerous walking and hiking trails available. With knowledgeable and friendly staff on hand, you can learn about the region's native flora and fauna, gaining a deeper appreciation for the ecosystem and the importance of conservation efforts.
The Centre also delves into the history and culture of the area, providing fascinating insights into the Māori heritage and the significance of the Waitakere Ranges. Interactive displays, informative signage, and captivating stories come together to create an immersive experience that is both enjoyable and informative.
Plus, there is a lovely gift shop at the Arataki Visitor Centre that offers a range of souvenirs and locally crafted items, making it the perfect place to find that special memento of your visit.
