Reach the tihi by 6am in time to see Matariki appear above the horizon and experience the beauty of the sky at dawn.
Starting point
Choose your own starting point from Huia Lodge in Cornwall Park or Te Whatu Stardome, and follow the trails to the summit.
This is a self-guided experience with map brochures available at each starting point.
What to bring:
Torch
Comfortable walking shoes
High visibility or reflective clothing
Dogs are welcome on lead
Parking
Vehicle entrances open at 5am. Access Cornwall Park via Green Lane West, or Te Whatu Stardome via 670 Manukau Road.
Toilets
Available near Te Whatu Stardome and at Huia Lodge.
Huia Lodge
Open 5 to 7am. Stop in for information, assistance, and kōrero and kaputī.

This event is a collaboration between the Tūpuna Maunga Authority, Te Whatu Stardome and Cornwall Park, and is part of the 2026 Tāmaki Makaurau Matariki Festival.

Getting there

Cornwall Park is less than 10 kilometres by car from Auckland city centre and is easily accessible by public transport, with several bus stops nearby. There is plenty of free parking there.
