From here, you’ll enjoy a nice, easy warm-up ride on a gravel road leading to the River Trail. This new trail cuts out 4km of gravel road and takes you right into the heart of the valley. It's the track boasts awesome views and a fantastic technical single track. While it's just 14km, it’s so good you’ll want to do it twice, plus there are plenty of spots to take a swim along the way or back at the campground.

Take the Papakura off-ramp from State Highway 1. Head towards Settlement Road and turn onto Hunua Road next to Sir Edmund Hillary School. Continue straight through to Hunua township, which is 6km further. Look for the yellow AA “DAMS” sign on your left and turn onto Moumoukai Road. Follow the gravel road, climbing past the Waiora Dam turnoff, and then descend to Mangatawhiri Dam. Park in the campground carpark at the base of this impressive earth dam, where you can clean your bike at the bikewash provided by ARC Hunua.
