The Lighthouse is an incredible artwork by Michael Parekowhai that you can find on Queens Wharf right in the heart of the city. From the outside, it looks like a typical 1950s family home, but once you have a look inside, you'll be transported to a whole new world. The interior is filled with neon lights that represent star constellations, creating a sense of awe and wonder. And let's not forget about the sculpture of Captain Cook, titled The English Channel, who sits among the stars, adding a sense of grounding to the piece.
The artwork is surrounded by a wooden jetty that seems to float on Queens Wharf, making it an easy spot to explore. You can peek inside through the windows and doors or even climb the staircase to get a closer look. Plus, you can view it from the sea on the Waiheke or Devonport ferries.
The Lighthouse is part of Auckland Council’s public art collection and was funded by Barfoot & Thompson and anonymous donors. It's a must-see for anyone who appreciates art or just wants to experience something quite unique.
