Eat your way around Ponsonby
Come hungry. Ponsonby has been one of Auckland’s go-to dining neighbourhoods for decades. For Italian, Prego is practically Ponsonby royalty. It’s been here since 1986, serving fresh pasta, pizza and its much-loved snapper to generations of Aucklanders. Down the road, Farina brings Southern Italy to Ponsonby with Napoletana wood-fired pizza, homemade pasta and a sunny courtyard perfect for one of Ponsonby’s infamous long lunches.
For gastropub fare and a prime people-watching position, Hotel Ponsonby is a neighbourhood local with a menu that covers small plates to steaks, schnitzel and Sunday roasts. Pull up a seat in the courtyard for lunch, or come later when the drinks are flowing.
For maximum choice with minimum group-chat negotiations, Ponsonby Central brings more than 20 eateries together under one roof, covering everything from quick bites to dinner and drinks. And yes, you should leave room for dessert. Grab a scoop from Duck Island Ice Cream or see what’s in the cabinet at Miann, where patisserie, chocolate and desserts look almost too good to dismantle. Almost. If you’re in the mood for an ice cream crawl, head to Little ’Lato, Island Gelato or Mövenpick, all fairly close to each other. The hardest part? Picking just one.
Grab a coffee
Ponsonby has no shortage of places to caffeinate before you hit the shops. Sol’s Place revived one of Ponsonby’s oldest café spots in 2021, carrying on the spirit of its namesake, local hospitality character Sol Filler. Sol was known for treating his venues like an extension of his home, and that same come-in-and-make-yourself-comfortable feeling is part of the appeal today.
Allpress Ponsonby is another reliable stop for an expertly made flat white, while at Daily Bread you have a tough decision: what to pair with your coffee – croissant, morning bun, or sourdough?
You’ll also find Pilar Cafe & Eatery, Bodega and Blue around the neighbourhood. Grab a table streetside to see the energy on the street, or take your brew to go as you peruse Ponsonby Road.

Shop local
You’ll find some well-dressed folk around Ponsonby Road, which has long been one of Auckland’s most notable destinations for New Zealand fashion.
Big local names including Karen Walker, Sylvester, WORLD, Zambesi and KILT all have a presence here, making this one of the best places in Auckland to shop New Zealand designers within a few blocks.
Prefer the thrill of finding something nobody else is wearing? Tatty’s is a Ponsonby institution for pre-loved designer and contemporary fashion, while the weekly Mini Vintage Market at Ponsonby Central is where you can discover vintage clothing, accessories and one-off finds.
Discover local art and design
At The Poi Room, contemporary art shares space with ceramics, jewellery, sculpture, pounamu and designs by artists and makers from across Aotearoa. {Suite} Gallery, Orexart, Endemicworld and Public Record add to Ponsonby’s gallery trail.
Make time for The Women’s Bookshop, an independent Ponsonby fixture that has been championing women’s writing since 1989.

Wellness in Ponsonby
While Ponsonby can do Friday nights well, it also caters to Saturday morning recovery. At SALA, work up a sweat with yoga or Pilates, then follow it with an infrared sauna or massage. If you love a good stretch, Eastwest covers everything from energetic yoga flows to restorative classes.
For relaxation head to endota spa Ponsonby for a massage, facial or body treatment, or book into Mai Day Spa for traditional Thai, oil, hot-stone or deep-tissue massage.

Ponsonby after dark
Ease into the evening at Broken Lantern, a neighbourhood bar pouring cocktails alongside craft beer and wine, or head to EST. 1901, an intimate cocktail and wine bar with cosy interior. If you’re up for a boogie, Ponsonby Social Club draws the after-dinner crowds, having long been a favourite of the neighbourhood’s late-night scene.
If you’ve still got more in the social tank, there are plenty more options within a few minutes’ walk. Settle in at neighbourhood winebar The Tinted Rose or visit Bedford Soda & Liquor, known for its creative cocktails. The Whiskey is the obvious detour for a dram, while Matchbox serves tacos alongside your favourite tipple if you need a late-night bite.
Stay in Ponsonby
Hotel Fitzroy curated by Fable brings five-star boutique luxury to a restored heritage villa just moments from Ponsonby Road. There are only 10 suites, pairing old-world character with contemporary interiors and highly personal service.
Nearby, The Great Ponsonby Arthotel takes a more eclectic approach, filling a restored villa with New Zealand and Pacific art across 11 individually styled rooms.
A short distance away, the QT Auckland offers premium, comfortable accommodation next to the iconic Victoria Park, or for oceanside vibes consider checking in to Sofitel Auckland Viaduct Harbour.

What’s on in Ponsonby?
Ponsonby knows how to host a crowd. Each February, the Auckland Rainbow Parade takes over Ponsonby Road with floats, performers, music and thousands of spectators lining the route, while local bars, restaurants and venues join the Pride celebrations.
Come December, Ponsonby Central Christmas Market Day turns a stretch of Ponsonby Road into an open-air shopping day, with local retailers joining more than 30 stalls selling New Zealand-made and designed gifts, plus live entertainment along the way.
Then, just off Ponsonby Road, Franklin Road Christmas Lights has been an Auckland festive tradition for more than 30 years. Residents decorate the street’s heritage villas with fairy lights, reindeer and wonderfully over-the-top Christmas displays, best explored on foot once darkness falls. To save yourself a headache with the traffic, you can catch the train to nearby Karanga-a-hape or Te Waihorotiu stations for an early dinner before heading over to Franklin Road.
At 39 Ponsonby, Tuesday nights are home to Poetry Live, Auckland’s longest-running spoken-word open mic, while regular Comedy Cafe nights give emerging comedians and seasoned pros a stage to test new material.
